Leroy - Roch - de Villaine

Since 1869, two families and one wine. In 1817, Jacques-Marie Duvault (1789-1874) marries Sophie Blochet. Resident of Santenay he is simultaneously an owner-grower, a négociant and Conseiller-General of the Côte d'Or. Renowned for his studies in Oenology, he is one of the most remarkable figures in Burgundy. In 1869 and aged 79 he realises his lifetime dream: the acquisition of Romanée-Conti.
On his death the vineyard along with the remainder of the enormous holdings that he had built up remains in the family divided between his daughters Claudine-Constance Massin and Henriette Dupuis. Widowed in 1883 Claudine-Constance bequeaths her share to her daughter Gabrielle Chambon who in turn leaves it to her aunt, Henriette Dupuis (1885). On Henriette's death in 1887 and with no direct heir, the vineyard passes to her sister and her nieces.
It then becomes the property of the two main descendants: Jacques Chambon (1889-1969) and his sister Marie-Dominique Gaudin de Villaine - née Chambon (1883-1915), both children of Gabrielle Chambon (1857-1903) and great-grand-children of Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet. To this day the Gaudin de Villaine family remain co-owners of the Société-Civile Domaine de la Romanée Conti with Edmond (1881
-1950) Henri (1909-1998) and Aubert representing the family's descendants and ownership. Today this family is made up of the children, grand-children and great-grand children of Henri, husband of Hélène Kinoviev and his brother Jean (1910-1975) husband of Simone-Marie de France. In 1942 Jacques Chambon ceded his shares to Henry Leroy (1984-1980) wine grower and merchant in Auxey-Duresses who
in turn passed them to his daughters Pauline Roch (1929- 2009) and Marcelle (Lalou) Bize. The former has two children, Isabelle and Henri-Frédéric, a third child Charles died in 1992. Perrine Fenal is the only child of Lalou Bize. Under the control of a supervisory board representing both families; Henri de Villaine and Pauline Roch (1990-2000) and today
Henri de Villaine and Perrine Fenal, the Domaine is run by two shareholder-managers: Aubert de Villaine and Lalou Bize-Leroy, from 1974-1991 and today Aubert de Villaine and Henri-Frédéric Roch who succeeded his brother Charles at his death in 1992.
